Fast-track Catcher Area Development project draws to a close for Kent Introl.

In perhaps one of the most challenging projects of 2016, Kent Introl has demonstrated quick reactions and timely innovation.   In 2015 Dril-Quip, responsible for Subsea Trees in the Catcher development operated by Premier Oil, tasked Kent Introl with developing a compact retrievable subsea choke suitable for North Sea applications. To date, 23 out of the total 29 subsea chokes have been produced and successfully delivered, with the balance to complete in the coming weeks.

“The main challenge was to develop a solution to integrate Kent Introl’s field proven subsea choke and intervention workover system with the compact structure. This involved collaboration with our supply chain and the other providers to the system to jointly develop a solution. Being able to draw on the experience and knowledge of our engineering team enabled us to design a workable, practical solution within the confines of the physical envelope and other design considerations provided by Dril-Quip.”

Due to the unique configuration of the host structure, an innovative new solution was developed to locate within a compact envelope and incorporate total vertical ROV access. The design utilises a Compact Landout Structure and dedicated Choke Insert Running Tool with the capacity for operation via ROV from inside the overtrawlable protective structure. When placed centrally within any host structure, there is a new-found potential for these versatile designs to positively influence weight reduction and reduce operating costs.   Tasked with a challenging project, Kent Introl has relished the opportunity to innovate and deliver.

“Innovations were required across all areas of the project lifecycle in order to meet the on-site requirement for the first deliverables. During pre-production stages an efficiency project was conducted considering all areas from procurement to manufacture, assembly and testing; the delivery demands were such that even the smallest improvements were undertaken. The improvements achieved as a result have been subsequently built into Kent Introl’s standard production practices, allowing for shorter lead times and more efficient production being incorporated into upcoming and future projects.”
